Portfolio Review Pokémon has been an interesting topic to further gain knowledge about for my portfolio. I was very surprised with some of the little, known details that allow this gaming culture to flourish. I was happy to highlight these details into my portfolio with my newly acquired insight on producing different genres of writing. I gained a personal feeling of enjoyment researching my lifelong hobby which is Pokémon. This creating of a portfolio has also given me the opportunity to combine my interest in marketing and also something I love and appreciate. To add, I have been able to build on my writing abilities using the predetermined goals set aside to allow for my portfolio to form in the most professional manner.
Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes.
This goal, in my own words, means that I will be able to write for different groups of people and for various purposes. One example from class to show my newly learned knowledge on this goal is the interview I wrote about a professor in my major. “How great it was to sit down with Dr. Shrivas Nowduri! His knowledge on writing allowed me to have a better insight on what will come in my future college career. I was lucky to know that Dr. Nowduri had done an exponential amount of tremendous writings that have satisfied his personal interests and his scholar’s wants. With complete trust in his own expertise, he verbally passed down his passion for detailed pieces of work, and I felt as though interviewing him was an opportunity all would appreciate.” Though this is just a segment of the full interview summary, it was written so that even a stranger would be able to understand the interview that I and Dr. Nowduri had. I wanted readers who we not in my class to be able to notice the connections that I made throughout the interview. This is a prime example of writing for various audiences and purposes.
Students will be able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to genre.
I translated this goal to mean that I will be able to adjust my writings to comply with the genre I am writing. There were many examples I could use to show my improved processes on adjusting my writings but my timeline for my portfolio suits the goals objective. Timeline writing is different than normal writing that you would use for an informative paper. I had to adjust what content I needed for each section of the timeline. Though the picture does not zoom in on the context of each section, one example would be “Ruby and Sapphire are released for Game Boy Advance. -Nintendo announces they are ending Wizards of the Coast Pokemon license, effectively terminating WoTC involvement in Pokemon (Designers of the Pokemon Cards to date).” I had to also write in a more fact-oriented fashion to allow the important information to stand out while also be concentrated and separate from other years on the timeline.
Students will be able to read, select, and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments.
For a simple translation in my own words, the goal for me is to be able to read and decipher info from readings to engage, enter, and support arguments. Other than Literature Circles, which are discussion groups made to talk about various pieces of literature in class, and various in-class group exercises, one example of my understanding of this goal from class was the sources I collected to support the information in my portfolio. The ten sources required to provide information for my portfolio fulfills the objective stated in this goal. This is because I had to sort through various possible sources to allow only the most concrete information to be inserted into my portfolio so that my research is legitimate in the eyes of my audience. I further fulfilled this goal by evaluating sources themselves to make sure they were credible and able to be used to reference.
Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/non-print genres.
My rephrased version of this goal is that I will be able to understand and transfer knowledge into various genres focused more upon the five senses rather than using Microsoft Word. Very prominent examples of accomplishing this goal is the constant use and updating of my online Wikispace page and the designing of my portfolio. Both show my learned knowledge on how to compose genres or genre-related non-print items that focus more on the five senses like using sensory instigators such as bright colors, alignment, order, proximity, which are smart moves to improve the look and flow of non-print genres, to allow my audiences to relate more to my portfolio. I wanted to make a smooth and clean visual concept to my portfolio to allow readers not familiar with our class concepts to understand the professional and unique design of my portfolio.
Make years standout more and color-coordinated better
Be aware of how to make common similarities.
Students will be able to discuss and apply appropriate writing processes both individually and in collaborative contexts.
For this last goal, I reworded more simply that this goal will allow me to be able to discuss and apply certain processes of writing from an individual and group perspective. During class, one example of this goal is during literature circles when the summarizer writes different formats of writing according to their group’s specific needs or ideas in that session. Another example is the revisions of all the genres and professional genres. Above shows a general revision table for one of my genres for my portfolio. Every member of the class most fill out these tables to help record and apply mistakes that others have been able to point out for our benefit. This satisfies the goal because this revision was able to be made with the comments from classmates, teacher, and myself to compose this table for future reference.
